Caregiver Programs
Pathways to Work and Permanent Residence in Canada
Canada’s Caregiver Programs are designed to help qualified caregivers work in the country and provide a pathway to permanent residence. These programs support individuals who offer essential care for children, seniors, or people with special needs.
What Are the Caregiver Programs?
The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot are two caregiver pathways that allow eligible applicants to come to Canada and work temporarily. These programs also provide an opportunity to transition to permanent residence after gaining sufficient Canadian work experience.
Eligibility Criteria
1. Work Experience
- At least two years of full-time work experience in Canada as a:
- Home Child Care Provider (NOC 44100): Caring for children under 18 in a private home setting.
- Home Support Worker (NOC 44101): Providing care for elderly individuals or people with disabilities in a private home setting.
2. Job Offer
- A valid job offer in Canada for either role.
- The job must be full-time and non-seasonal.
3. Language Proficiency
- Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of 5 in English or French.
4. Education
- At least a one-year post-secondary diploma or credential.
- If your education was completed outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is required.
5. Intent to Work and Live in Canada
- You must demonstrate your intent to reside in Canada and work in the caregiver occupation.
How Do the Programs Work?
Option 1: Temporary Work Permit
- Applicants can apply for a work permit tied to a specific employer while accumulating the required two years of Canadian work experience.
Option 2: Permanent Residence Application
- If you already have two years of qualifying Canadian work experience, you can directly apply for permanent residence.
Both pathways allow your family members to apply for open work permits or study permits, supporting your household’s transition to life in Canada.
Why Choose the Caregiver Programs?
- Pathway to Permanent Residence: A clear route to settle in Canada permanently.
- Family Inclusion: Bring your spouse and children while working in Canada.
- Flexible Work Experience Options: Gain work experience over time, even with breaks between jobs.
